As we mentioned to you earlier this year, The 5th annual Roots Picnic will take place this Saturday and Sunday at Festival Pier in Philadelphia. The festival features a diverse line-up of hip-hop, electronica, and indie rock including De La Soul, Rakim, Major Lazer, Tuneyards, James Murphy (DJ set), and of course house band / headliners, the Legendary Roots Crew.

To get you ready, the Legendary Crew has released the OFFICIAL ROOTS PICNIC 2012 MIXTAPE, available for free download on their website, complete with tracklisting. The old school style mixtape, mixed by Philly’s own DJ Low Budget, has 30+ jams and runs over an hour long. It features tracks by many of the artists that will be appear this weekend plus some others, including songs by: The Beastie Boys, Childish Gambino, De La Sol, Kid Cudi, Major Lazer, LCD Soundsystem, Diplo, Tune-Yards and more. We just test blasted it in the car and it sounds SUH-WEET!

While you’re getting ROOT DOWN, check out this video of a drum ladden tribute to fallen Beastie, Adam Yauch “MCA”, performed by The Roots at last weeks UCLA’s Jazz/Reggae Fest last week.

And finally, ONCE AGAIN, The Roots will headline and serve as house band for this Summer’s Fourth of July Jam, FREE, on Ben Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, featuring Daryl Hall, Common, and more.
